Salmiakki or
salmiak is a variation of candy root added ammonium chloride and commonly found
in Nordic countries, the Netherlands and North Germany. Ammonium chloride
produces a salty and sharp taste, called "making the tongue an" and
"rather stinging".
Salmiakki has a
distinctive flavor, so people unfamiliar with ammonium chloride will find it
very strong and difficult to enjoy. Salmiakki candies are generally black or
dark brown and have a tough texture to hard. Salmiakki is also used as
flavorings in other foods such as ice cream and alcoholic beverages.
