Malapari or
mempari (Pongamia pinnata) is a kind of
beach-dwelling tree, member of the tribe of Fabaceae (Leguminosae). This tree
is also known by local names such as nuts (Mly.); mabai (Bk.); ki pahang, ki
pahang laut (Sd.); bangkong, bangkong, ladybug (Jw.); kranji (Md.); butis,
sikam (Tim.); blessing (Alor); asawali, sawali, awakal, wawakal (Amb.); liada
(CERAM); hate hira (Ternate); maho (galela); marauwen (Minh.)
Named as Indian beech in
English, the tree is spread from India to the west, China and Japan to the
north, Malesia region, to Australia and the Pacific. In Indian languages:
poongam, pungai, karanj, honge, and others.
