Makunouchi (幕
の
内?)
Is a famous Japanese bentō type, consisting of fish, meat, pickles, eggs and
vegetables accompanied by rice and umeboshi. There are also other types such as
rice-beans, fish sushi, and soup-rice-and-meat.
The word makuno-uchi bentō
("bento between scenes"), dates from the Edo period (1603 to 1867),
which they present on the sidelines of a break during the theater performances
(幕
間)
Noh and Kabuki.
Since the Meiji Age, Makunouchi
has become the common bentō sold in the railway station. The department store
usually sells bentō with the name Makunouchi. Although the choices and the
amount of food within Makunouchi's bentō can vary between stores, Makunouchi
usually has more food items than other food packages provided in the store, so
the price becomes more expensive.
