Dreams are
subconscious experiences that involve sight, hearing, thoughts, feelings, or
other senses in sleep, especially during sleep accompanied by rapid eye
movement (REM sleep).
Occurrences in dreams are
usually impossible in the real world, and beyond the power of the dreamer. The
exception is in the dream that is called lucid dreaming. In such a dream, the
dreamer realizes that he is dreaming while the dream is still going on, and is
sometimes able to change the environment in his dream and control some aspects
of the dream.
Dreamers can also feel
emotions when dreaming, such as the fear of emotion in a nightmare. A subject
which studies about dreams is called oneirologi.
Dreams occur at the stage of
eye movement during sleep, where the activity of the brain is high and as if in
a state of awakening. The length of the dream varies, at least a few seconds,
or about 20-30 minutes.
Opinions about the meaning
of dreams vary by time and culture. Most Freud fans agree with the meaning of
vision in a dream is a vision of hidden desires and emotions. Several other
theories suggest that dreams are the stage of memory formation, problem
solving, or simply the product of brain activation.
