Beschuit met muisjes (Dutch pronunciation: [bəsxœyt mɛt mœyʃəs] ) is a traditional food served to celebrate the birth of a baby in the Netherlands, although it is often eaten daily outside of the birth celebration.
Beschuit is similar to toast but slightly softer. They are round, and prepared by baking small cylindrical bread, cut into two and bake a second time. They were smeared with butter (or margarine) and sown muisjes on it.
Muijes is sold in a mixture of two colours: White and pink. In 1990 a new mix was introduced: white and blue, and it has become a habit but not common, that the blue is presented when the boy is born and the pink for the girl. When a child is born to the Huis van Orange-Nassau kingdom, orange muisjes are sold.
